Ledgebrook raises $200M in primary equity, co-led by Allianz X and Rockefeller Capital Management

Ledgebrook funding: the Boston insurer raised $200M in primary equity co-led by Allianz X and Rockefeller Capital, plus an Allianz Re reinsurance deal.

By Archit Tamrakar · · 5 min read

Ledgebrook, a Boston insurer that describes itself as an AI-native specialty insurance platform, said on 7 October 2026 that it raised USD 200 million in primary equity financing. Allianz X and Rockefeller Capital Management co-led the round. Separately, Allianz Re agreed to a multi-year reinsurance agreement with the company.

The release does not give a valuation, name any other investor, or state a cumulative funding total. It is the largest round in Ledgebrook's disclosed history, which began with a $4.2 million seed.

How much did Ledgebrook raise and who invested?

Ledgebrook raised USD 200 million, and the company's release says Allianz X, "the strategic investment arm of the Allianz Group", and Rockefeller Capital Management co-led it. It adds that "existing and new investors also participated" without naming them. FinTech Global reported the same terms on 8 October 2026.

Is the $200 million equity or debt?

It is equity. The release uses the phrase "primary equity financing" and describes no loan, credit facility or other debt component. "Primary" means the money goes into the company's treasury through newly issued shares, as opposed to a secondary sale where existing holders sell their stock to new buyers and Ledgebrook receives nothing.

The Allianz Re agreement is a different instrument. Reinsurance is insurance bought by an insurer to pass on part of the risk it writes. The company says Allianz Re "has agreed to enter a multi-year reinsurance agreement" with Ledgebrook "separately" from the equity round. It adds no premium volume, ceded share or terms, and those details are not public.

What does Ledgebrook do?

Ledgebrook writes general liability, professional liability and specialty cover for mid-sized businesses in the excess and surplus (E&S) market, distributed exclusively through wholesale brokers. E&S is the part of the US market that covers risks admitted carriers decline or price differently. Wholesale brokers place those risks on behalf of retail agents.

The company says its platform, Blackbird, "reads submissions, classifies risk, and calculates a technical price", often quoting "in hours rather than weeks", with experienced underwriters making the final decision. That speed claim is the company's own. The release gives no loss ratio, quote-to-bind rate or revenue figure to test it against.

Ledgebrook says it is on track to surpass USD 1 billion in cumulative premium written since it started writing business in 2023. Premium written is the amount of insurance sold, not revenue or profit. It also says it has around 300 employees, including some 80 underwriters and 50 engineers.

In August 2026, AM Best assigned its carrier, Ledgebrook Specialty Insurance Company, a Financial Strength Rating of A- (Excellent) and a Financial Size Category of VIII, per the release. The company says this completed its transition to a full-stack platform, meaning it now holds its own insurance carrier rather than only acting as an agent for others.

Who founded Ledgebrook?

Gage Caligaris founded Ledgebrook in Boston in 2022 and is its founder and CEO. The company describes him as a Harvard mathematician and actuary. Insurance Journal reported in June 2025 that he traded commodity derivatives at Barclays before starting in insurance in Liberty Mutual's actuarial program, where he became senior director of new mobility products.

John Mullen is president of E&S at Ledgebrook. The same Insurance Journal article says he joined from Liberty Mutual.

How much has Ledgebrook raised in total?

Ledgebrook has not published a cumulative total, so this article does not add one. The rounds reported publicly are below.

The 2026 release does not label the round with a letter, unlike the earlier ones. Readers comparing it with the $65 million Series C from June 2025 should note that the new round is more than three times larger.

Why did Allianz X invest?

The company says the investment expands Allianz X's US property and casualty platform into mid-sized general liability risks in the E&S market. The release says Ledgebrook is "filling a meaningful gap on the platform" and complementing Allianz X's existing positions.

Dr. Nazim Cetin, CEO of Allianz X, is quoted in the release: "The industry is applying AI to its simplest risks first, because that is where automation comes easily. We think the larger prize sits at the other end, in complex, hard to place business." John Mullen said in the release that admitted carriers tightened their appetite and pushed risks into the E&S channel. Both statements are company-supplied and are not independently measured.

What will the money be used for?

Ledgebrook says it will "scale its technology and extend Blackbird". CEO Gage Caligaris said in the release that the capital lets the company "keep investing in technology and talent". The company gave no hiring targets, product launches or capital allocation split.

The company's earlier stated priorities, from its June 2025 Series C coverage, were adding talent, offering new products through the platform and retaining more risk on the business it writes for carrier partners. Whether the 2026 capital will be used for the same purposes was not stated.

What's still unclear?

Several points are open as of 13 October 2026:

  • Valuation. Neither the release nor FinTech Global's coverage gives one.
  • Other investors. Only the two co-leads are named. Whether prior backers such as The Stephens Group took part is not stated.
  • Round label and size of each lead's cheque. The release does not split the $200 million between investors.
  • Reinsurance terms. The Allianz Re agreement is described only as multi-year. No ceded premium, share of risk or start date is given.
  • Underwriting results. The $1 billion premium figure is a growth measure. The release gives no loss ratio or profitability data, so it cannot show whether the book is making money.
  • Weakest point of the thesis. The speed claim for Blackbird rests on company statements. Human underwriters make final decisions, so the headcount of about 80 underwriters is a reminder that the model still depends on people.
  • Funding history gaps. Public reports do not give dates for the seed, the $4.6 million round or the Series B.
