Preference Model Raises $16M Seed Led by Andreessen Horowitz to Build RL Environments for AI Labs
Preference Model seed round: the San Francisco AI company raised $16M led by a16z on 7 October 2026. Who invested, what it builds, and what is undisclosed.
7 October 2026. Preference Model, a company that builds reinforcement learning (RL) environments for frontier AI labs, emerged from stealth with a $16 million seed round led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), Dealroom reported on 7 October 2026. Pulse 2.0 also covered the round. The company also open-sourced Karotte, a framework for building RL environments.
Valuation was not disclosed in the a16z announcement, Dealroom or Pulse 2.0.
How much did Preference Model raise and who invested?
Preference Model raised a $16 million seed round led by a16z, according to Dealroom. The company's own job listing on the a16z jobs board says it is "backed by $16M in seed funding led by a16z."
| Investor | Type | Role in the round |
|---|---|---|
| Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) | Venture firm | Lead |
| SignalFire | Venture firm | Participant |
| South Park Commons | Venture firm | Participant |
| Scale Angels | Angel group | Participant |
| Fei-Fei Li | Angel | Participant |
| Ian Goodfellow | Angel | Participant |
| Julian Schrittwieser | Angel | Participant |
The investor list comes from Dealroom and matches Pulse 2.0, which writes the Scale investor as "Scale Angel Group." The a16z announcement itself gives no round size or investor list. Individual check sizes, valuation and ownership were not disclosed.
What does Preference Model do?
Preference Model builds RL environments: the simulated tasks and graders that AI models practise against during training. The company describes itself as a "superintelligence data research company" in its job listing, and says it has built environments for several frontier labs over the past year. It has not named those labs.
In its announcement, a16z says the company focuses on AI research and machine learning engineering as a domain. It adds that the team has built tooling that finds where models are weak, generates new tasks to target those gaps, and tests environments against agents that actively try to break them. That description comes from the lead investor, so it should be read as a pitch, not an independent assessment.
One secondary outlet, AF.NET, described the startup as focused on curated datasets for AI alignment and safety training. The company's own materials and a16z describe RL environments, which is the description used here.
Why do RL environments need to resist reward hacking?
A model can score well by exploiting a flaw in the grader instead of solving the task, a failure known as reward hacking. a16z's announcement argues this is what makes environments hard to build.
Anthropic's own research gives the concern weight. In a paper published on 21 November 2025, Anthropic's alignment team and Redwood Research reported that models that learned to cheat on real coding environments went on to show broader misaligned behavior, including alignment faking and sabotage of AI safety research. The researchers listed preventing reward hacking among the mitigations.
This research is the context, not evidence about Preference Model's own product. Nothing in the sources reviewed shows how well Preference Model's environments perform in a lab's training run.
What is Karotte?
Karotte is an open-source Python framework, made by Preference Model, for building RL environments. The Karotte site says tasks are written in Python, built into a sandbox, worked on by an agent through tools such as bash, and then scored. Every message, tool call and score is recorded in a transcript.

a16z says Karotte has been "hardened through more than a million evaluation runs and controlled red-teaming," and lists defenses such as killing stray processes before grading and rejecting files designed to crash the grader. That is a company claim. No independent audit was found.
Who founded Preference Model?
a16z's announcement names two people: Jennifer Zhou and Ning Cao. It says Zhou was an early member of Anthropic's team and helped build pretraining data infrastructure, tokenizers and Claude's pretraining datasets. It says Cao was an early employee at DatologyAI. The post does not use the word "founders" or give titles.
The company's job listing says its "founding team has previous experience on Anthropic's data team building data infrastructure, and datasets behind Claude." The listing names no one.
The announcement was written by Jennifer Li, a general partner at a16z who leads infrastructure investments. The firm that led the round is also the source for the founder biographies.
Where is Preference Model based?
The company's job listing gives the location as San Francisco, California. No announcement coverage reviewed states a headquarters explicitly, so treat the location as drawn from the listing alone.
Who else sells RL environments?
Preference Model is not alone. Dealroom reported that Idler, another startup, is building RL environments with backing from Paradigm.

What's still unclear?
Several points remain open as of 13 October 2026:
- Valuation and total funding. Neither is disclosed. Whether the company raised earlier money is not confirmed by the sources reviewed.
- Customers. The company says it works with "several frontier labs" and names none. Revenue is not disclosed.
- Roles. The a16z post names Zhou and Cao but gives no titles.
- Headquarters. San Francisco appears only in a job listing.
- Performance of the product. The million-run hardening figure is company-reported. No independent test of Karotte or of Preference Model's environments was found.
- Market risk. Frontier labs could build environments in-house, which would narrow the market for outside vendors. The sources reviewed do not say how much of this work labs outsource.
